2009 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este Celebrates 80 Years of Luxury

concorso_bmw

This April, Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este will hold its traditional automotive beauty contest for the 80th year in a row and will be sharing the octogenarian spotlight with co-sponsor BMW. Celebrating 80 years since the production of their very first automobile, BMW will bring a few very special guests to this year’s Concorso, including the BMW 303, the first Bavarian car to sport the kidney-shaped radiator grille, and the all-new BMW Z4. Also among the beauty pageant contestants will be the 1969 BMW 2800 Spicup Coupé, a concept vehicle first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show 40 years ago. Designed using textbook Bertone front-end styling and drawing heavily from Albrecht Goertz’ BMW 507, the BMW 2800 Spicup Coupé eventually became lost in the shuffle until it was “discovered” last year in Holland. In April, the BMW 2800 Spicup Coupé’s grand debut at the Concorso will mark its first public appearance since undergoing total restoration.

“The past 80 years have shown the high status that BMW accords to design and style. The same applies to the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. And that is not least of all why are a perfect fit,” said Karl Baumer, Director of BMW Group Classic and Chairman of the Concorso. Added Jean-Marc Droulers, President of Villa d’Este S.p.A., “The success story of this event in recent years not only shows how well we work together but also reflects our sheer enjoyment in hosting such an extraordinary occasion.”

2009 BMW Z4 Roadster

2009 Detroit Auto Show 2009 BMW Z4 Roadster

We’ve known it was coming for a few years, but now BMW has finally unveiled its all new Z4 Roadster at the Detroit show. The car has been thoroughly redesigned, and it includes a power retractable two-piece aluminum roof—a first for the Z4. A fixed-roof coupe will no longer be produced.

The new Z4 is slightly larger and heavier, but it’s also more luxurious and has a more user-friendly cabin than the outgoing model. Although its wheelbase has grown by only 0.1 in., the new car is 5.8 in. longer and 0.4 in. wider. The result is increased passenger space, with 0.2 in. more head room, 0.8 in. more shoulder room along with 1.7 in. more elbow room. The door openings were also increased by an inch to aid with ingress/egress, while 40-percent larger side windows improve outward vision. The downside to the car's increase in mass is…its increased mass — the curb weight of the base model is up by about 200 lb., to 3240 lb.

A 255-bhp 3.0-liter inline-6 will come standard in the base model, which will be known as the Z4 sDrive30i. Of note, this engine was formerly the top engine available in the Z4, excepting the M Roadster and M Coupe, of course, which used a 330-bhp normally aspirated 3.2-liter inline-6. The new top-shelf powerplant is BMW's well-known (and well-loved) 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-6 with 300 bhp and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. This car becomes the Z4 sDrive35i, begging the question: Could BMW have made the model designations any more cumbersome?

Both models come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, which BMW says features the shortest throws of any car they make. The sDrive30i is also available with a 6-speed automatic, while the sDrive35i can be fitted with a 7-speed version of BMW's new twin-clutch M DCT transmission. Both the 6-speed automatic and 7-speed twin-clutch gearboxes come with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

BMW claims the twin-clutch Z4 sDrive35i outsprints its 6-speed manual brother by 0.1 sec to 60 mph (5.0 vs. 5.1), while the manual-equipped sDrive30i hits 60 mph in 5.6 sec vs. the automatic's 6.0. Although a BMW official told us the company currently has no plans for an M version of the new Z4, we wouldn’t be surprised to see one within two years.

Dynamic Drive Control will be standard on the new Z4, this feature allowing the driver to choose among three settings (at the touch of a button on the center console) for throttle mapping, engine management, stability control response and the electric-assist power steering.

The interior has also been given a complete rethink. It's far more stylish and has several new (and needed) storage cubbies. The Z4 will be available with iDrive for the first time as part of the optional navigation package. The nav/iDrive's 8.8-in. high-resolution display screen retracts into the dashboard when not in use.

The new Z4 will go on sale in Europe in May, hitting U.S. dealers this summer. BMW estimates the price of the sDrive30i will be in the mid $40s, with the sDrive35i in the low $50s. While it’s true these are higher prices than the current soft top Z4, the increases reflect the significant upgrades in engines and content.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss

2009 Detroit Auto Show Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss

Question: How do you properly commemorate the production run of a supercar coming to an end? Answer: Name the final, limited-edition versions in honor of one of the most legendary race drivers ever—Sir Stirling Moss. To our delight—and despite the fact the SLR Stirling Moss will only be sold in Europe—Mercedes-Benz saw fit to unveil the car to the world at this year’s Detroit auto show.

Although the SLR McLaren build cycle will come to an end in May of this year, Mercedes will offer 75 of these roofless and windowless special edition SLRs, to be built from June through December. Why name the car after Stirling Moss? Because in 1955 Moss won the historic Mille Miglia race in 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds while driving a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR. His average speed was just about 100 mph on the twisting and undulating country and village roads of Italy.

Without doubt the 2009 Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss edition could top that astounding pace, powered by a supercharged V-8 with 650 horsepower, promising a 0-60 time of less than 3.5 seconds. With a top speed of 217 mph, the car is sure to be a wicked ride that requires driver and passenger alike to wear full face helmets, lest they get a 217-mph bug in the face.

This retro racer, which is based on the M-B SLR McLaren Roadster, is fitted with a completely new carbon-fiber body. Inside, it carries the engraved signature of Sir Stirling Moss on a special aluminum plate surrounding the shift lever. Keeping true to the original 300 SLR of the 50s is an electrically adjustable rear aerodynamic spoiler/airbrake, along with two tonneau covers stored in the trunk.

If you want to buy one of these Silver Arrows, first you must qualify as “the most loyal of SLR customers,” according to Mercedes. Only then do you get the chance to fork out just over $1,000,000 for the privilege of wearing a bug-splattered grin.

2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI Quattro

2009 Detroit Auto Show 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI Quattro
2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI Quattro

Audi just unveiled a faster and more powerful R8 at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. This premium sports car is fitted with a potent V-10 engine, and it comes with upgrades such as magnetorheological dampers and minor styling changes that reflect the heightened level of performance.

Inspired by Audi's successes at 24 Hours of Le Mans, the new R8 is powered by a direct-injected 5.2-liter V-10. Instead of injecting fuel into the intake ports, fuel is atomized and sprayed directly into the combustion chambers at over 1700 psi of pressure. This allows for a higher compression ratio and better fuel burn, thus enabling the V-10 to deliver 518 bhp and 391 lb.-ft. of torque. The increase in engine efficiency also means better fuel economy. Audi tells us the R8 V-10 will achieve 17.2 mpg.

Built on an all-aluminum chassis supported at all four corners by double-wishbone suspension with Quattro all-wheel-drive, the new R8 V-10 is aided by the aforementioned dampers that automatically adjust to various road conditions. Carbon-ceramic brakes designed to withstand repeated usage with minimal fade are optional.

On the outside, very little sets the R8 V-10 apart from its 8-cylinder sibling. Up front, the crossbraces for the intake have been reduced in number from four to two. The center grille is finished in chrome. The headlight cluster features all-LED lighting. And around the side, the air vents just aft of the doors are more accentuated. The vents at the rear also have two crossbraces, along with oval tailpipes instead of a pair of twin exhausts.

The Audi R8 V-10, fitted with the R Tronic automatic transmission, will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 sec. with a top speed of 196 mph. It will go on sale in Germany in the second quarter of 2009, priced around $182,000. There is no information at this time regarding a U.S. launch date.

Italdesign Giurigaro Namir

2009 Geneva Auto Show Italdesign Giurigaro Namir

Italdesign Giugiaro didn't disappoint at the Geneva Motor Show, revealing a new wedge-shaped hybrid sports-car concept called the Namir. The project was developed in cooperation with British carmaker Frazer Nash.

Besides the Namir's radical styling, what draws attention are Italdesign Giugiaro's claims: To put it simply, the Namir prototype is said to be the fastest yet also the most environmentally-friendly hybrid in the world.

Turin, Italy-based Italdesign Giugiaro says power for the Namir would come from an electric motor in conjunction with a "medium-powered" engine. The result would be a top speed of 186 mph, with 0–62 mph (100 km/h) in less than 4 sec. All this, while achieving a claimed 117.6 mpg with CO2 emissions of just 50 g/km. Of course, those numbers are all theoretical since the Namir is simply a concept at this point.

The lightweight and rigid chassis is made of carbon fiber, while the Namir's body uses aluminum and carbon fiber. The beautifully-finished interior is designed for high-speed comfort.

Aston Martin Lagonda Concept

2009 Geneva Auto Show Aston Martin Lagonda Concept

At a time when the Big Three could be considering Chapter 11 and iconic brands are teetering on the verge of extinction, a brand founded by an American has been revived.

Enter stage left: Lagonda. Who? What? Why?

Lagonda was established by Wilbur Gunn, a native of Troy, Ohio who went to England to set up a European branch of his brother-in-law's Lagonda steam engine equipment manufacturing company.

Incidentally, "Lagonda" is the name of a district that grew up on the banks of Lagonda Creek, itself a corruption of the local Indian name for the river. To cut a long story short, Lagonda became part of Aston Martin in 1947 when it was bought by David Brown (the DB in Aston nomenclature).

Lagonda has now been revived by Aston Martin as being "above Range Rover" and described as a "useable" Roll-Royce, with four seats and all-wheel drive. Although the Lagonda Concept is powered by Aston's V-12, expect diesels, hybrids and "technologies not available to Aston Martin" to feature in the upcoming Lagonda models, which won't appear until 2012 "at the earliest."

Marek Reichman, Aston Martin's director of design, describes the Lagonda Concept's design language as "a fusion of fluid shapes mixed with hard, constructed lines. This organic, emotional approach eschews upright surfaces in favor of broad, flowing bodywork around the spacious passenger cabin."

Aston Martin and Lagonda CEO, Dr. Ulrich Bez, explains that Lagonda "will create a new kind of customer relationship, instilling the spirit of travel, adventure and style into a single, formidable package. An Aston Martin demands to be driven; a Lagonda demands a destination."

Rolls-Royce 200EX Concept

2009 Geneva Auto Show Rolls-Royce 200EX Concept

On the heels of Rolls-Royce's record sales result in 2008, which saw sales increase worldwide by 20 percent — from 1010 cars to 1212 (of note, although Northern European and Middle Eastern markets grew by the largest amounts, North America continues to be Rolls-Royce's biggest single market) — the company is in the process of developing an all-new, smaller model called the RR4.

The 200EX concept shown at the Geneva Motor Show gives the design direction Rolls is heading with the car, which will be powered by a new V-12 built by BMW, but only used by the British marque. Rolls says the 200EX/RR4 uses "a unique monocoque body, which is not shared with any other vehicle."

Styling, though, is similar to the Phantom sedan's, from its overwhelming grille to its suicide doors. Sizewise, the 200EX/RR4's 129.7-in. wheelbase, 212.6-in. length and 61.0-in. height are 10.9, 17.1 and 3.3 in. less, respectively, than those of the Phantom. Officials went on to say that 80 percent of the car's components will be exclusive to Rolls-Royce, no doubt trying to separate the RR4 from a presumed BMW 7 Series connection.

The RR4 will be built alongside the four Phantom models in Goodwood, England, with an estimated price of $250,000–$280,000 when it goes on sale in 2010.

Smart Domain Name Theory

Choosing your domain name is the first marketing step you will most likely take for your website. It is, arguably, the most important step as it decides how your site is described in the overall weave of the Web, and the most fundamental name it will go by.

As such, it is a fairly relative thing; there is no ‘right’ domain name, just the one that works for you best both practically and aesthetically. As your ‘signature’ on the Internet, you should try to imbue it with qualities that pique the interest.

Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Make it catchy. First and foremost, the name is your site’s most fundamental advertisement and should be memorable yet simple enough to remember. Ideally, it’s a name people can hear in conversation, go home and accurately type into their browser from memory alone. As an example, consider the well known movie news site Ain’t It Cool News; ‘aintitcool.com’ may not be the most succinct domain name out there, but it carries with it a conversational charm that sticks easily in the brain. Puns also work well in this respect; ‘videogames.com’ will never stand out as well as ‘gamasutra.com’ – the play on words creates the attention, the implied link between the subject matter and pleasure maintains it (And, of course, out-and-out references to sex always make an impression as long as they’re used appropriately).
  2. Make it short. As we’ve already discussed, brevity isn’t the most important factor. However, the shorter the name, the easier it is to remember and the quicker it is to type into a browser – all part of making it easy for the potential customer to find you.
  3. Make it different (Enough). A slightly different twist on your site’s content not only helps make it memorable, it is also sometimes inevitable simply because the simplest names will have already long gone. If you’re setting up an online music retailer, you can bet your bottom dollar that ‘cheapcds.com’ was snapped up years ago so don’t even consider it. Generic names come with an extra risk on top, for they’ll have so many variations floating around that, even if you think up an unclaimed version, you may be running the risk of granting a competitor extra trade because the customer clicked on ‘cheapdiscs.com’ when they meant ‘cheaperdiscs.com’. However, it’s a lot harder to mistake ‘compactdiscounts.com’, because it’s such an idiosyncratic take on the same idea.
  4. Don’t deny the power of the ‘i’. Nothing says ‘fast, efficient and technologically advanced’ than the letter ‘i’ before your name – just ask Apple. Sure, ‘iShop’ sounds cheesy, but it also implies that your shopping site is efficient, easy-to-use and utilizes the very latest the online experience has to offer – in short, all the kinds of things you want your name to embody. It may sound like I’m contradicting the previous point here for we see ‘i(Blank)’s everywhere we go, but sometimes clichés are worth considering if they give the impressions we’re looking for (And by the same token, an ‘e’ often works just as well – What’s more interesting, ‘eCommerce’ or ‘Commerce’?).
  5. Make it say what you do. Put a word in that directs lately to the site’s content, or the service it provides. Not only does this help make it memorable, it’s also very friendly to search engines. If you want people to find your football podcast, for example, names like ‘footballdebate’ or ‘talkingfootball’ will always come up favorably in speculative Google searches.
  6. Always, always, ALWAYS write them down. You may have the most intriguing business/site name in the world, but until you’ve seen it in front of you in scrunched Domainspeak you have no idea what it’ll look like. Just ask artistic agency database Who Represents, who obviously hadn’t done a paper draft when they registered ‘whorepresents.com’. You could try and reverse-argue that one as a wry comment of the underlying desperation inherent in the entertainment industry, but good luck getting anyone to buy it…
As said before, there is no subjectively ‘right’ way to choose a domain name. However, if you keep the above points in mind they will help you come up with one that’ll stick in people’s minds and keep the traffic flowing through your site from here on in. And then all you have to worry about is making the content match.

Wikipedia scrubs Obama eligibility

Wikipedia, the online “free encyclopedia” mega-site written and edited entirely by its users, has been deleting within minutes any mention of eligibility issues surrounding Barack Obama’s presidency, with administrators kicking off anyone who writes about the subject, WND has learned.

A perusal through Obama’s current Wikipedia entry finds a heavily guarded, mostly glowing biography about the U.S. president. Some of Obama’s most controversial past affiliations, including with Rev. Jeremiah Wright and former Weathermen terrorist Bill Ayers, are not once mentioned, even though those associations received much news media attention and served as dominant themes during the presidential elections last year.

Also completely lacking is any mention of the well-publicized concerns surrounding Obama’s eligibility to serve as commander-in-chief.

Where’s the proof Barack Obama was born in the U.S. or that he fulfills the “natural-born American” clause in the Constitution? If you still want to see it, join more than 300,000 others and sign up now!

Indeed, multiple times, Wikipedia users who wrote about the eligibility issues had their entries deleted almost immediately and were banned from re-posting any material on the website for three days.

In one example, one Wikipedia user added the following to Obama’s page:

“There have been some doubts about whether Obama was born in the U.S. after the politician refused to release to the public a carbon copy of his birth certificate and amid claims from his relatives he may have been born in Kenya. Numerous lawsuits have been filed petitioning Obama to release his birth certificate, but most suits have been thrown out by the courts.”

As is required on the online encyclopedia, that entry was backed up by third-party media articles, citing the Chicago Tribune and WorldNetDaily.com

The entry was posted on Feb. 24, at 6:16 p.m. EST. Just three minutes later, the entry was removed by a Wikipedia administrator, claiming the posting violated the websites rules against “fringe” material.

According to Wikipedia rules, however, a “fringe theory can be considered notable if it has been referenced extensively, and in a serious manner, in at least one major publication, or by a notable group or individual that is independent of the theory.”

The Obama eligibility issue has indeed been reported extensively by multiple news media outlets. WorldNetDaily has led the coverage. Other news outlets, such as Britain’s Daily Mail and the Chicago Tribune have released articles critical of claims Obama may not be eligible. The Los Angeles Times quoted statements by former presidential candidate Alan Keys doubting Obama is eligible to serve as president. Just last week, the Internet giant America Online featured a top news article about the eligibility subject, referencing WND’s coverage.

When the user tried to repost the entry about Obama’s eligibility a second time, another administrator removed the material within two minutes and then banned the Wikipedia user from posting anything on the website for three days.

Wikipedia administrators have the ability to kick off users if the administrator believes the user violated the website’s rules.

Over the last month, WND has monitored several other attempts to add eligibility issues to Obama’s Wikipedia page. In every attempt monitored, the information was deleted within minutes and the user who posted the material was barred from the website for three days.

Angela Beesley Starling, a spokeswoman for Wikipedia, explained to WND that all the website’s encyclopedia content is monitored by users. She said the administrators who deleted the entries are volunteers.

“Administrators,” Starling said, “are simply people who are trusted by the other community members to have access to some extra tools that allow them to delete pages and perform other tasks that help the encyclopedia.”

According to Alexa.com, Wikipedia is the seventh most trafficked website on the Internet. A Google search for the words “Barack Obama” brings up the president’s Wikipedia page in the top four choices, following two links to Obama’s official websites.

Ayers, Wright also missing in Obama’s bio

The entire Wikipedia entry on Obama seems to be heavily promotional toward the U.S. president. It contains nearly no criticism or controversy, including appropriate mention of important issues where relevant.

For example, the current paragraph on Obama’s religion contains no mention of Wright, even though Obama’s association with the controversial pastor was one of the most talked about issues during the presidential campaign.

That paragraph states: “Obama explained how, through working with black churches as a community organizer while in his twenties, he came to understand ‘the power of the African-American religious tradition to spur social change.’ He was baptized at the Trinity United Church of Christ in 1988 and was an active member there for two decades.”

Ayers is also not mentioned, even where relevant.

WND monitored as a Wikipedia user attempted to add Ayers’ name to an appropriate paragraph. One of those additions, backed up with news articles, read as follows:

“He served alongside former Weathermen leader William Ayers from 1994 to 2002 on the board of directors of the Woods Fund of Chicago, which in 1985 had been the first foundation to fund the Developing Communities Project, and also from 1994 to 2002 on the board of directors
of the Joyce Foundation. Obama served on the board of directors of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge from 1995 to 2002, as founding president and chairman of the board of directors from 1995 to 1991. Ayers was the founder and director of the Challenge.”

Within two minutes that Wikipedia entry was deleted and the user banned from posting on the website for three days, purportedly for adding “Point of View junk edits,” even though the addition was well-established fact.

The Wikipedia entry about former President George W. Bush, by contrast, is highly critical. One typical entry reads, “Prior to his marriage, Bush had multiple accounts of alcohol abuse. … After his re-election, Bush received increasingly heated criticism. In 2005, the Bush administration dealt with widespread criticism over its handling of Hurricane Katrina. In December 2007, the United States entered the second-longest post-World War II recession.”

The entry on Bush also cites claims that he was “favorably treated due to his father’s political standing” during his National Guard service.” It says Bush served on the board of directors for Harken and that questions of possible insider trading involving Harken arose even though a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation concluded the information Bush had at the time of his stock sale was not sufficient to constitute insider trading.

Germany grieves after school shooting

WINNENDEN, Germany (AFP) – Flags flew at half mast across Germany on Thursday as the numbed nation mourned the 15 mainly female victims of a teenage gunman in a picturesque town.

Hundreds of candles were left outside the school in Winnenden where 17-year-old Tim Kretschmer picked off nine pupils and three teachers before killing three other people in the town. He then turned the gun on himself in a shootout with police.

Churches were packed for special services held late Wednesday and dozens of people held a vigil outside the school on what Chancellor Angela Merkel called "a day of mourning for all of Germany."

"Our thoughts go out to the families and the friends. We are thinking of you and we are praying for you," she added.

The front page of the local paper, the Winnender Zeitung, was just a blank black page on Thursday, except for a single word: "Why?"

The same question was being asked on the streets and in the churches of the town north of Stuttgart.

"There is more violence than there was 10 years ago," Heidi Loebe, a saleswoman told AFP. "I do not understand it. This is a boy who had finished his studies and begun a training course."

"We have perhaps all failed," one man, a tax advisor, said without giving his name. "The big question now is: Why did he do it?"

Police have given no motive for the slaughter. Eleven of his 12 victims at the school were female, and nearly all were expertly shot in the head.

However, Ralf Michelfelder, police chief in Waiblingen whose officers also cover Winnenden, said the "first indications" as to motive were emerging.

More details should be available at a news conference later in the day, he said.

Kretschmer went into one classroom three times, the Bild daily said. On the third visit he told the class: "Aren't you all dead yet?" A teacher threw herself in front of a female pupil -- and was shot by the gunman, Bild said.

Heribert Rech, interior minister of the southern state of Baden-Wuerttemberg where the massacre took place, said there was nothing to indicate that the teenager held a grudge against the school.

After leaving last year, Kretschmer had enrolled on a course to train as a salesman. He regularly worked out at the gym and belonged to a sports club.

"He was completely unremarkable, there was nothing in his background to suggest this could have happened," the minister said. Fellow students described him as "quiet" and "reserved," even "friendly."

Kretschmer came from a prosperous family. His father is a successful businessman who employs 150 people, according to media reports. His parents and sister, still in shock, have been taken to a secret location, German television reported.

However, he found it difficult to fit in at school and had few friends. "He was simply not accepted by anyone and just sat all day in front of his computer," a school colleague identified at Mario told German television station N24.

Reports also say he was obsessed with computer shooting games -- especially the violent shoot-em-up Counterstrike -- and had become a crack shot. It appears most of his victims died from accurate shots to the head.

His father owned over a dozen guns, all locked away except the nine millimetre Beretta that caused the carnage. According to media reports, Kretschmer senior was "domineering" and a member of a local gun club, which his son also visited.

Rech said Kretschmer had "destroyed the soul of an entire school and ripped into the heart of a town."

The rampage ended in the car park of a shopping centre about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from Winnenden.

Cornered in the car park, there was a shootout between the teenager and the police in which he was shot in the leg, Rech said.

"He fell down, got up again and reloaded his gun. He was found soon afterwards dead," Rech said. State police chief Erwin Hetger said it was believed he had turned the gun on himself.

The school remains cordoned off and will not open for the rest of the week. There have been calls for it to remain closed forever as a sign of respect.
